Probiotics are good, living bacteria and yeasts that are good for you. They promote good digestion and interact with the bacteria that live in your gut. Probiotics occur naturally in fermented foods like yoghurt, sauerkraut, kumbucha, kimchi and more. Some people prefer to take probiotic supplements. When you balance the good and bad bacteria, your body works as it should. When you take antibiotics, this medication kills bacteria that are doing harm to your body, so you need to rebalance your gut bacteria by taking probiotics.

Eat Fermented Foods for a Healthy Mind

Fermented foods go back millions of years to the days before refrigerators and ovens, when people had to preserve their foods, or their foods “went off” and they ate this food and suddenly felt so good! Today, scientists are still studying fermented foods and probiotics to see just how they improve bodily condition, cognitive functioning and well-being. These amazing bacteria sources can improve allergies and there are links now to diseases like Alzheimer’s, oral conditions, depression, high cholesterol, eczema, obesity and diabetes that can be treated using fermented foods. When something ferments, the bacteria or yeasts feed on the sugars created in the foods. The tiny bacteria then form what are called compounds such as alcohol or lactic acid and these then preserve the food. So, the fermented foods are then full of friendly bacteria and good enzymes – all great for gut health and then mind and body health.

The bacteria actually first digest the food which makes it far easier for your gut to then process and digest – all nutrients from the food are absorbed into the body where they are needed. Keeping your stomach healthy can keep disease away because it keeps away inflammation, allergies and any autoimmune disorders. It is best to make your own fermented foods as those you buy may have hidden sugars or additives. Many people are now making their own yoghurts, kefir, kimchi, kumbucha and fermented vegetables, including sauerkraut. All pickles are good such as gherkins and pickled onions; sauces made from soy are good such as soy sauce, miso and tempeh. Treat candida, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohns Disease and more with homemade fermented foods, for gut health.

Fermented Foods You Can Make for Gut Health

  • Kefir – made from fermented cow’s milk and tastes like drinking yoghurt. It contains plenty of Vitamin B12, K2, calcium, magnesium, folate and biotin.
  • Yoghurt – fermented dairy and very popular as it tastes so good. Full of probiotics but get the organic variety.
  • Raw cheese – not pasteurised so full of good bacteria to treat digestion, neurological conditons and more.
  • Kumbucha – fermented tea high in B vitamins, acid and enzymes for immune health, weight loss, increased energy and detoxification.
  • Sauerkraut – fermented cabbage high in fiber, Vitamins A, C, K and B, iron, copper, calcium, manganese and magnesium.
  • Pickles – any vegetables in vinegar with herbs and spices and full of Vitamin K and minerals.
  • Miso – fermented soybean, barley or brown rice with a fungus called koji. An anti-aging fermented food that reduces the cancer risk and improves bone health.
  • Kimchi – fermented vegetables with spices and seasoning – great for heart health, digestion, obesity, diabetes and more.
  • Tempeh – fermented soybeans with a starter bacteria that is used to treat bones, menopause and muscle recovery as it is full of proteins and Vitamin B.
  • Natto – fermented soybeans containing vitamin K2 and great for inflammation.
